Chinua Achebe's burial fixed for May 23


The remains of the late renowned author, Prof. Chinua Achebe, will be buried on May 23, 2013 Gov. Peter Obi, Chairman of the South East Governor’s Forum, has said.

Addressing newsmen on Sunday in Enugu at the end of the forum’s meeting, Mr. Obi said the burial would hold in Ogidi town, Anambra State, and would be attended by stakeholders from across the globe.
He said the forum also discussed the issue of security in the zone as well as the flag off of the Enugu International Airport by President Jonathan.
“This afternoon, we talked about issues that are important to the South-East among which are  Enugu International Airport, security issues and, again, the issue of Achebe’s burial.
“We wish to announce that the burial will take place on May 23; his first son is here with us.
“Enugu Airport is an international airport and we discussed early visit of the President to flag off  construction,” he said.
In an interview, the late Achebe’s first son, Ikechukwu Achebe, commended the Federal Government and the South East governors for their commitment to the burial plan.
“Our father was a wonderful family man. Although he was a global citizen, he was always a good husband and father.
“The South East governors have indicated that the burial of my father is an important event; we are looking forward to working and consulting with them.
“So far, we have had tremendous support,’’ he said.
The meeting was attended by Govs Theodore Orji of Abia, Martin Elechi of Ebonyi, Sullivan Chime of Enugu and the deputy governor of Imo, Eze Madumere.
